Color Sorting Tray

Ages 2โ€“4 ~15 min ๐Ÿƒ Montessori

What You'll Need

  • A muffin tin (or small bowls/cups in a row)
  • Colorful objects โ€” pompoms, blocks, buttons, or dried pasta dyed with food colouring
  • Tweezers or tongs (optional, for an extra fine motor challenge)
  • Colored paper circles to place in each muffin cup as a color guide

Let's Do It!

  1. Place a colored paper circle in the bottom of each muffin cup as a sorting guide.
  2. Mix all the colored objects together in a bowl or small tray.
  3. Show your toddler what to do: pick up a red pompom, find the red cup, drop it in.
  4. Invite them to continue: "Can you find another red one? What about blue?"
  5. When everything is sorted, count each group together: "How many yellows?"
  6. Let them tip it all back in and start again โ€” repetition builds mastery!

๐Ÿ’ก Parent Tip

Start with just 2 colors to keep it simple, then add more as your toddler gets confident. Tongs or tweezers make this an excellent pincer-grip workout โ€” a key pre-writing skill. If you don't have pompoms, dyed pasta or cut-up pieces of colored paper work just as well.
