Pouring Station

Ages 2โ€“4 ~20 min ๐Ÿƒ Montessori

What You'll Need

  • A small pitcher or measuring jug
  • 2โ€“3 cups or small bowls of different sizes
  • Water (add food colouring to make it exciting!)
  • A shallow tray or do it in the kitchen sink
  • A small sponge for spill cleanup โ€” let them clean up too!

Let's Do It!

  1. Set up 2โ€“3 cups and one small pitcher on a tray. Fill the pitcher about halfway with water.
  2. Demonstrate slowly: pick up the pitcher with two hands, tilt, and pour into a cup.
  3. Invite your toddler to try: "Can you pour the water into that cup?"
  4. Let them pour back and forth between containers โ€” repetition is the whole point!
  5. Introduce a funnel, a ladle, or a turkey baster for extra challenge.
  6. Let them pour the water down the drain at the end โ€” a satisfying finale!

Why Montessori Loves This

  • Pouring is a core Montessori "practical life" skill that builds real-world independence.
  • The slow, deliberate motion develops concentration and hand-eye coordination.
  • Spills are expected and welcome โ€” cleaning them up teaches responsibility.
  • Toddlers who practice pouring gain confidence that transfers to dressing, eating, and more.

๐Ÿ’ก Parent Tip

Use a tray to contain spills and let your toddler clean up with a sponge when they occur โ€” don't rush in to do it for them. Montessori philosophy says the cleanup is as valuable as the activity itself. Start with dry beans or rice if water feels too messy at first.
