Safe Slime
What You'll Need
- ยฝ cup white school glue (like Elmer's)
- ยฝ tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp contact lens solution (must contain boric acid โ check the label)
- Food colouring (optional)
- A mixing bowl and a spoon or craft stick
- A zip-lock bag or airtight container to store it
Make It Together
- Pour the glue into the bowl. Add a drop or two of food colouring and stir.
- Add the baking soda and mix well โ your toddler can stir this part!
- Add the contact lens solution and stir vigorously. The mixture will start to pull away from the bowl.
- Knead with your hands for 2โ3 minutes until it becomes smooth and stretchy.
- If it's too sticky, add a tiny drop more contact lens solution at a time.
- It's ready when it stretches slowly without breaking!
Let's Play!
- Stretch it slowly and let it drape โ "How long can you make it?"
- Poke it, squeeze it, and flatten it into a pancake.
- Fold it over itself and watch the colors swirl together.
- Press small objects (buttons, googly eyes) into the surface and pull them back out.
- Talk about how it feels: "Is it cold? Slippery? Stretchy?"
What They'll Learn
๐ก Parent Tip
Slime keeps in a zip-lock bag in the fridge for up to a week. Always supervise and remind toddlers not to eat it โ it's not edible. For the youngest toddlers (under 3), try the edible playdough activity instead. The "wow" moment of watching glue transform into slime is pure science magic for kids!
