Sensory Rice Bin

Ages 1–4 ~20 min πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ Supervised

What You'll Need

  • A large plastic bin or storage container
  • 2–3 cups of dry rice, dried pasta, or dried beans
  • 5–10 small objects to hide: toy animals, blocks, buttons, coins (ages 3+)
  • A plastic cup or spoon for scooping (optional)
  • A plastic mat or old sheet underneath for easy cleanup

Let's Do It!

  1. Pour the rice into the bin and let your toddler run their hands through it first β€” just feeling it is the whole point!
  2. While they watch, bury 5 small objects in the rice: "I'm hiding something… can you find it?"
  3. Let them dig, sift, and discover each hidden item.
  4. Name each object they find and describe how the rice feels: "Cold? Bumpy? Smooth?"
  5. Let them re-hide the objects for you to find β€” toddlers love being the one in charge!
  6. Extend the play: add measuring cups and practice scooping and pouring.

πŸ’‘ Parent Tip

Sensory bins are one of the best tools for toddler focus β€” many children will stay engaged for 30+ minutes. You can change the filling seasonally: rice in summer, dried lentils in autumn, fake snow in winter. Store the bin with a lid and reuse it for weeks!
